Assignation at Rosings

Darcy paced back and forth in his rooms in Rosings. His stay there had been thus far… an unmitigated disaster. His aunt had insisted on being completely horrid to the love of his life at dinner, and he had no idea if he could possibly salvage the relationship in any way. He’d offended the beautiful and mercurial Elizabeth Bennet with his stumbling proposal to her, insulting everything about her when he had meant only to praise. Truly, he thought as he looked at himself in the mirror, he was a fool in every manner of the word.

He stared at his drawn face, and shook his head. How could he have thought that Miss Elizabeth would ever find him acceptable to her? He had thought that she might possibly grow into fondness for him, by virtue of the coin that came with taking his name. She would have wanted for nothing for the rest of her life, and would have needed only to tolerate his presence. He would have given her everything she desired, if only she’d agreed to be his wife.

But what woman would want a man who so reviled her family and her connections as he did to hers? He let out an audible moan at his own stupidity as he sank down onto the padded bench that sat at the end of his bed in the grand bedroom he’d been given for the duration of his stay.

Truly, what could he do to salvage any of it? He rubbed a hand over his face and then paused when a knock came at the door. He stood.

“Enter,” he said. The door swung open, and Colonel Fitzwilliam stood there, sly look on his face.

“Well, you’ve done it. Gone and insulted the girl so badly she won’t even look me in the face- the mistress of the house, that kindly Mrs. Collins turned me away at the door,” Fitzwilliam said with a drawl as he walked into the room. Darcy sighed and looked away.

“I do not wish to speak of it-“

“The girl is within your reach, you are one of the richest men in England, there is nothing you cannot have-“

“But I will not have the one who does not want me,” Darcy cut Fitzwilliam off. “She made her feelings quite clear to me, and we are to leave tomorrow. I will retire to Kent and think no more of her.”

“She will haunt your every dream, Darcy. We are almost as brothers, and I know you. You will not stop to think of her for a moment, for a fraction of a breath. You will see her in every shaped cloud upon the horizon. You are a romantic at
